Water in the legs after a long day in the heat at the office - everyone is probably familiar with this.
But real leg edema, which does not disappear quickly and causes pain, can be a real torment for those affected.
3 possible causes (of many) for this are:
-> Heart failure
The blood is pumped more slowly by the heart than normal and it backs up in the veins. As a result of the fluid backing up in the leg veins, it is deposited in the surrounding tissue. In addition, because the heart pumps less, the kidney receives less blood flow and excretes less water to compensate for the supposed low blood pressure. However, this further increases the amount of fluid in the body.
-> damaged lymphatic vessels
If the lymphatic vessels are damaged, the lymphatic drainage is disturbed and the lymph fluid collects in the surrounding tissue.
-> Liver disease
When the liver can no longer produce albumin, leg edema occurs. Albumin is in fact responsible for preventing blood fluid from leaking out of the vascular system.
