Osteoarthritis is a wear and tear of cartilage in joints that can be accompanied by severe pain.
If the knees are affected, this often significantly impairs the quality of life. But what actually increases the risk of developing knee osteoarthritis (also called gonarthrosis)?
-> Injuries on the knee
Meniscus damage, cruciate ligament rupture, or a bone fracture that is close to the knee joint increase the risk of developing osteoarthritis down the road.
-> Overweight
The weight that you have too much on your ribs also increases the load on your knees and the joint surfaces wear out faster.
-> Malpositions
If there is a malposition in the knee joint, such as a knock-kneed or bow-leg, this leads to incorrect loading and, sooner or later, to osteoarthritis.
-> one-sided movement/sport that puts a lot of stress on the knees
However, not all osteoarthritis requires immediate surgery. You are welcome to make an appointment with us for conservative treatment.
