CMD (craniomandibular dysfunction) is a malfunction of the temporomandibular joint.

In a sense, it is a disturbance in the interaction between the skull and the lower jaw. This often results in pain in the jaw joint or in the jaw muscles when chewing. Severe headaches and clicking noises in the jaw can also be a sign of CMD. The causes are often located directly in the temporomandibular joint, but can also be due to disturbances in the spine, joints or pelvis. For this very reason, a holistic approach is essential. Holistic here means an interdisciplinary cooperation of different disciplines; e.g. physiotherapists, orthopedists, dentists, optometrists, otolaryngologists, etc. According to CMD-Dachverband e.V.(www.cmd-dachverband.de), about 7 million people in Germany are affected by CMD. Of these, about 50% require treatment.
